I love spending my birthday in a new, exciting city! There is just something magical about celebrating the anniversary of my birth somewhere unknown. It’s like a fresh start! This year, my goal was to go somewhere close where I hadn’t spent much time before. I chose the Emerald City, Seattle, Washington which is a quick 2 hour plane trip from San Francisco! Perfect! I am a huge Frasier fan so I was looking forward to exploring this beautiful Pacific Northwest city. However, this was a different kind of trip. My goal wasn’t to see as much as I could see. It was more of a see what I can and relax. I really needed a retreat. If you have read my other post, you already know that a lot of my travels revolve around culinary culture, coffee and wine. Seattle has that holy trinity in abundance but I couldn’t indulge because……..I’m six months pregnant!! That’s right, the Cultured Americana has a baby on board and I look forward to introducing my baby to the “cultured life”. So now that I got that out of the way, let’s talk about this birthday trip!
Accommodations: My favorite thing to do is to travel like a local. Therefore, if I stay in a city longer than 2 nights, I usually try to get an apartment. I stayed in Seattle for 4 nights so I rented an apartment in the Capitol Hill neighborhood through homeway.com. Capitol Hill is FABULOUS! It’s very close to Seattle University and walking distance from the downtown area. There are a lot of cute coffee shops, breweries and restaurants. It is also a very safe and clean neighborhood. The flat I rented was fantastic as well. Here are a few pics…..
What to Eat: Let me first say, I’m having a pretty good pregnancy. However there are a couple of issues that cause me to have a lot of dietary restrictions. It’s a shame but it is what it is. I hope to go back to Seattle soon (after baby) and really indulge but for this trip I did manage to find some nice culinary experiences despite having to be really picky.
Breakfast- Skillet Diner
1400 East Union Street
Seattle, WA 98122
I enjoyed this nice little neighborhood spot right across from my flat on Union Street and 14th Street. I’ll tell you if I didn’t have so many restrictions I would have gone to town in this place but I did eat here twice and enjoyed Mike’s Scramble (the recipe changes daily). For the life of me I can’t remember what I had the second time I came here……but i know i liked it! Ugh pregnancy brain moment!!
Lunch or Dinner- 8oz Burger
1401 Broadway, Seattle Washington 98122
My first night in Seattle I called in and ordered a turkey burger from 8oz Burger. This is a popular spot and had I gone to dine in the restaurant, I would have waited a long time to be seated. I was also pretty exhausted so I preferred to take my meal to go. It was good! However, I’m sure it would have been fantastic had I eaten it in the restaurant and ordered the side of fries I really wanted as opposed to the salad I HAD to order. Again, I will be back post baby!
Dinner: Sky City (on top of the Space Needle)
400 Broad Street
Seattle, WA 98109
OK OK OK…..This is kinda just a cool place to go and experience Seattle. It’s at the top of the Space Needle and the restaurant rotates. If you are in the same place for 45 minutes you will experience one full rotation. The views of the city are spectacular. I went in the daytime but I can imagine at night!
I ordered the Grilled Wild King Salmon. It was good! It could have been better if I allowed them to make it their way but since i’m pregnant and freaked out about every thing i put in my mouth I requested they made sure it was well done. It was still pretty good but I need to go back……not pregnant.
Cultured Americana Tip: I believe you get free entrance to the top of the Space Needle with your reservation so take advantage of that. Additionally, it’s best that you have a reservation. I was fortunate and kinda snuck in. I asked for a reservation for the same day and they were full. I went back and asked what if I came back right as they opened for dinner (4:30) could they let me in and they were able to accommodate me. I think I got lucky so like I said……make a reservation. I believe it’s a $35 min/person for the free entrance to the Space Needle I’d say this is a Seattle experience you must collect at least once.
Pike Place-Luckily I’ve been to Seattle once a long time ago on business where I witnessed the throwing of the fish. There was no fish throwing when I visited the fish market at Pike Place this time. If this is your first time in Seattle, I urge you to wait around until they start throwing the fish!
Original Starbucks- 1st & Pike- Funny story. I thought I had found the original Starbucks so I went in and ordered a latte (contrary to popular belief pregnant women can have up to 200mg of caffeine/day. Espresso has about 80 but it still freaks me out so I only drank half of it…..more to collect the experience of drinking coffee at the original Starbucks in Seattle.) Winds up, I wasn’t at the original Starbucks. I was across the street from it at a “not original Starbucks”. There was a line at the Original Starbucks and I gather they have some kind of tour. I wasn’t in the mood so I took pictures of the outside. That will have to do until next time!
Here are a few other pictures I took around Seattle!
After my trip to Italy a couple of years ago, I decided that I would try to do at least one international trip every year. However, with a baby on the way this year, I thought I might have to skip. This wasn’t the case. Stay tuned for part II of this post. I managed to turn my quick domestic trip into an international adventure……..
