“ My Ahhhhh-didas, walk through concert doors
And roam all over coliseum floors
I stepped on stage, at Live Aid
All the people gave, and the poor got paid.”
— Run DMC
Run DMC dropped My Adidas in my early elementary school days. This was probably one of my first introductions to hip-hop and the beginning of a my falling in love with this fantastic culture. This anthem was an accidental proclamation of hip-hop style and sneaker culture that would eventually turn into a multi-billion dollar business. Of course, I had to have some. I have had at least one pair of “shell top” Adidas in my wardrobe since elementary school. I am now a 30- something professional woman working in Corporate America and I still occasionally rock my "originals”. Shell top Adidas represents quintessential hip-hop style and are in my book are (bear with me as this term is overused) a hip-hop ICON. Why iconic? This is a an element in hip-hop that has endured through out the 30+years of the ever evolving culture. They are original and they are as CLASSIC as Run DMC.
